However, it's Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I that really captures the attention in this first look footage, with the Australian actress appearing virtually unrecognisable as the Virgin Queen.

These are, to be certain, two formidable actresses, even though one (Robbie) often pushes against the tide by selecting roles that one wouldn't necessarily expect of her. Ronan has actually been tied to this project since 2013, several years before she delighted audiences in Lady Bird, for which she earned an Oscar nod (her third one, and she's now approaching her mid 20s). "But ruling side-by-side we must do so in harmony, not through a treaty drafted by men lesser than ourselves", Mary writes in the trailer.

Mary, Queen of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart.

Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry following the death of Francis II. But she comes up against Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie), who rules over both England and Scotland, and the two fiercely independent women in a male-dominated world engage in a battle for the throne.

Based on the biography by John Guy, the film is directed by theatre director Josie Rourke from a screenplay by Beau Willimon, best-known as the creator of 'House of Cards'.

The film, which hits theaters December 7, centers on the rival monarchs Mary of Scotland (Ronan) and Elizabeth of England (Robbie).

Both now must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence.

Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, Martin Compston, Ismael Cordova, Brendan Coyle, Ian Hart, Adrian Lester, James McArdle, with David Tennant, and Guy Pearce also star. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones - and change the course of history.
