Chelsea have now won the battle to sign the Italy global, who has agreed terms on a five-year deal to be reunited with Sarri at Stamford Bridge.

With his appointment now confirmed, the 59-year-old Italian said he was looking forward to the challenge of competing for the Premier League crown after Chelsea slipped to fifth last season - having won the title the year before.

Napoli are said to have threatened Jorginho with an ultimatum that either he joins Chelsea or he spends the remaining two years of his contract in Naples.

"It is an exciting new period in my career", said Sarri.

Chelsea believe they have got in Sarri an astute tactician who produces sides playing exciting football with his three years at Napoli harvesting two second-placed finishes in Serie A.

And Sarri has also been enrolled straight on to an intensive course to improve his English, following his move to Stamford Bridge.

"The club would like to thank Maurizio Sarri for the work he has done over the past three years", read a statement from the Serie A side.

"We hope Maurizio finds, wherever he goes, that same warmth, respect and affection he enjoyed from everyone at the club and in this city".

With little over three weeks left in the transfer window and four until the first Premier League match of the 2018-19, Sarri can not count on time as an ally.

The Premier League champions recently signed Riyad Mahrez for a club record £60m fee, and the winger won't be a guaranteed starter by any means.

With Sarri expected to steer Chelsea towards signing Alisson if Courtois decide to leave the club in the summer, the Blues could be on a collision course with Liverpool for the Brazilian.
