John Degenkolb won a dramatic ninth stage of the Tour de France which saw Chris Froome and Richie Porte among the riders to crash during a chaotic race across the cobbles of northern France.

Van Avermaet also extended his general classification lead ahead of the rest day, leading Geraint Thomas (Sky) and Philippe Gilbert (Quick-Step Floors) by 43 and 44 seconds respectively.

Besides Porte, it might be easier to list the riders who didn't crash rather than those who did, with sharp corners coming out of cobbled sections causing a succession of chutes.

While Porte headed for hospital, their other contender Tejay Van Garderen - who started the day just nine seconds off yellow - got himself caught up in crashes and conceded more than five minutes, to effectively rule himself out of contention.

After his fall he was able to sit up, and move to the side of the road, but he held his right shoulder and was unable to remount his bike.

Porte, 33, came into stage 9 sitting 10th on GC.

Race radio confirmed the Tasmanian had abandoned the Tour.

Dutch ace Dylan Groenewegen sprinted to a second straight win on stage eight of the Tour de France on Saturday, edging Andre Greipel and Fernando Gaviria only for the second and third-placed riders to be disqualified for being too physical.
