The freaky attack came after the rescue diver claimed that the mini-sub that Mr Musk built for the rescue and delivered to the site personally was just a PR stunt. In an interview after the successful rescue of all players, Unsworth said the submarine "had absolutely no chance of working" because the inventor "had no conception of what the cave passage was like".

Musk further questioned the allegation of a PR stunt, saying he had repeatedly declined to help until the death of former Royal Thai Navy special operations diver Saman Gunan in the cave.

Calling Unsworth "sus" - or, suspicious - was just the tip of the iceberg.

"He was one of the driving forces in getting everything done and clarifying for us divers what was going on", he told AFP.

In response Mr Musk, 47, posted a series of tweets and referred to the British caver as "pedo guy", apparently on the basis that he is a westerner living in Asia.

Musk did not take Unsworth's remarks lightly.

Representatives for both Tesla and SpaceX did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The caver said he would make a decision when he flies back to the United Kingdom this week, but added that the episode with Musk "ain't finished". Despite the report being publicly available, Musk tweeted that the idea he is a top GOP donor is "categorically false", as well as tweeting that he is "not a conservative".

Musk then followed his tweet with another, saying, "You know what, don't bother showing the video".

Unsworth, who lives in Thailand, was among the first cave divers on the scene in Mae Sai after the boys from the Wild Boars football team and their coach became trapped inside on 23 June.

Unsworth had been helping out the mission from the beginning: he has lived in Chiang Rai for six years, and frequently explores the caves where the Thai soccer team was found.

Perth vet Craig Challen and expert cave diver Adelaide anaesthetist Dr Richard Harris were awarded the protection following negotiations between Australian and Thai authorities, Four Corners has revealed.

In an interview with Bloomberg just a week ago, Musk said he would try and temper his Twitter usage.

Musk flew to Thailand to deliver the submarine.

Agence France-Press reported on Monday that Vernon Unsworth is considering taking that step after Musk used the term in a tweet over the weekend.
