The Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District is reporting seven chickens from the District's sentinel chicken flock on Holland Tract, near Knightsen have tested positive for antibodies against West Nile virus.

Additional mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile Virus in both the east and west sides of Highland Park, town officials said Thursday. Another crow collected in Sussex County also was reported as WNV-positive four days later. "But with extensive aerial spraying, we have now knocked back mosquito numbers in Delaware".

Light colored shirts and long trousers and long-sleeved shirts are very helpful. To help prevent mosquitoes from breeding, BPHC advises residents to empty standing water from flowerpots, gutters, buckets, pool covers, pet water dishes, discarded tires, and birdbaths on a regular basis. The virus can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain.

Defending yourself - use repellents containing DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.

Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long trousers and socks when outdoors, particularly at dawn and dusk and in areas with large numbers of mosquitoes.

Limit time spent outside at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

Make sure screens fit tightly over doors and windows to keep mosquitoes out of homes. If bitten, residents can develop West Nile non-neurological syndrome, or West Nile neurological syndrome, which is more serious.

Symptoms of severe illness include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis.

West Nile virus has been detected in several counties across the state, including Adams County.
