A crash involving a passenger bus and three other vehicles on a highway in New Mexico early Sunday has killed three people and sent 22 to the hospital, authorities said.

The series of three connected crashes involved 38 people and happened in rapid succession on the interstate just after 2 Sunday morning. "A lot of agencies involved, a lot of patents, a lot of critical patients", said Sandoval County Fire Chief James Maxon.

Maxon didn't immediately know what caused the collision involving a passenger bus, a semitruck, a pickup truck and a vehicle.

Multiple injuries were reported after a multi-vehicle crash involving a tour bus in New Mexico.

Officials with the El Paso - Los Angeles Limousine Express say there were 32 total passengers on the bus, along with two drivers. The oncoming tour bus driver then swerved to avoid the disabled vehicles in the road but was unable to avoid them and struck the wreck from behind, ejecting one of the motorists inside the vehicles and overturning the bus, trapping 35 people. Four have since been discharged and four others are in critical condition with 8 more hospitalized with various injuries.

The Rio Rancho Fire Department says Jaws of Life had to be used to free passengers from the bus.

Eight patients were taken to another hospital, and authorities said six were treated and released.

It's not known which vehicles the three deceased were in.

Interstate 25 was shut down in both directions for over 11 hours, but the wreckage has since been cleared and the roadway, reopened.
