Following contract talks, the club, which boasts Spanish star Alan Baro, is poised to sign the eight-time Olympic gold medallist in a six-week deal.

Usain Bolt is considering an offer from Australian A-League side Central Coast Mariners.

"This bloke's an ambitious athlete", Rallis said.

The Mariners are based in Gosford - about 50 miles north of Sydney - and finished bottom in the A-League last season, recording the longest winless run of 11 games.

"The deal between the Mariners and Usain Bolt in principle has been agreed, subject to a couple of benchmarks", he told the Big Sports Breakfast radio show on Tuesday. That's why the trial is really important because if he comes and he's not up to the level, then it actually has a detrimental effect.

Bolt has previously trained with clubs in Germany, Norway and South Africa.

Rallis told Channel Nine Bolt was serious about becoming a soccer player.

"I've just done everything I wanted to do in the sport", Bolt told Reuters a year ago. In September 2017, he said he wanted to just "be a bum" for a while, but said he was not ruling out a "Floyd Mayweather comeback" and flagged football as a sport of interest.

The fastest man in history has joined Central Coast Mariners, in Australia's top league.

From our perspective, it would only be big if he can play and it goes really well.

Former Manchester United assistant and Hull City manager Mike Phelan was appointed the club's sporting director on Monday.

Mr Rallis said negotiations continued over Bolt's pay.
