Putin said he told Trump during their talks that "the Russian state never interfered and does not plan to interfere in internal American electoral process". "We have been clear in our assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and their ongoing, pervasive efforts to undermine our democracy, and we will continue to provide unvarnished and objective intelligence in support of our national security".

Trump roiled Washington on Monday when he refused to denounce Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and said both countries were to blame for the current low point in U.S. -Russia relations. Mark Warner of Virginia tweeted, chiding Trump for swallowing the Russian president's insistence that his government did not meddle. Earlier Trump began the meeting with warm words for Putin, seated next to the Russian leader in an ornate presidential palace in Finland, and said it was a longstanding goal of his to improve US-Russian ties.

"Trump declines to side with USA intelligence over Putin" blared a CNN chyron a little while later, as anchor Wolf Blitzer somberly declared the "Russians must be high-fiving each other" following the summit. "I don't see why they would do it", Trump added.

The press conference was held just days after the U.S. Justice Department indicted 12 Russian intelligence agents on charges of hacking the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign to aid Trump.

At the press conference that even Republicans are blasting, Trump also said he had confidence in his intelligence people but Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today. He offered to have the people working on the case come and work with their investigators with respect to the 12 people. "I think we will have an extraordinary relationship".

But this isn't the first time that Trump has faced intra-party criticism for his handling of Russian Federation, and in the past that hasn't translated into major repercussions from his base.

At a press conference following the summit, Trump praised their "direct, open and deeply productive dialogue" and emphasised the need for continued diplomacy over confrontation.

Putin said Russian Federation and the United States could "analyze together" the claims which form the basis of special counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing investigation into alleged collusion.

In Helsinki, Putin said he had indeed wanted Trump to win the election - a revelation that might have made more headlines if not for Trump's performance - but had taken no action to make it happen.

"To side with Putin over US intelligence is disgusting; to fail to defend the on the verge of treason".

A video shows a man, who is believed to be a journalist, being removed by an apparent Secret Service officer from the joint Putin-Trump press conference.

The White House has not yet responded to a request for comment from Fox News.

Johnson says USA intelligence agencies have "documented evidence" of Russia's interference and called it "serious" and "unacceptable".

A detailed indictment Friday against 12 Russian military intelligence officers suggests that Mueller felt he got the information needed to construct the case without the Federal Bureau of Investigation having direct access to DNC equipment.

GOP consultant John Weaver, who in the past worked for Huntsman, McCain and Kasich, tweeted that the Russian ambassador should step down after Trump's performance.

Democrats were, of course, also harsh in their reaction to the president.

Schumer said the power to check the president's relationship with Russian Federation lies in the hands of congressional Republicans, because they control both houses of Congress.

Trump for his part blamed bad relations between Moscow and Washington on the U.S. investigation into alleged Russian election meddling.
