"Exact casualties are yet to be ascertained as the rescue operation is on", regional chief fire officer Arun Kumar Singh said.

"The buildings collapsed like a match box".

At least three people were killed and a dozen feared trapped after an under-construction building collapsed onto a residential complex outside Delhi.

Senior police official Ram Kumar said the two buildings appeared to have violated building codes and did not have approvals from the district government.

"The rescue efforts are taking time since we can not use heavy machinery to clear the rubble for fear of harming the trapped victims". But the exact number of people believed to be trapped remains unknown, officials said.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday night directed the police and administration departments to monitor and coordinate with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the rescue operation.

Emergency workers sifting through piles of iron and concrete overnight pulled out three bodies Wednesday from the site in Greater Noida, a satellite town east of the Indian capital.

Drills are being used to remove metal rods to reach those trapped and a dog squad was at the site searching for signs of life.

Three persons have been arrested in connection with the incident in which several people are feared trapped under the rubble, police said on Wednesday. Quoting a resident, it reported that the residential building had been built illegally on a developer's land.

One witness said she felt the earth was shaking as the buildings came crashing down.

The second building also collapsed under the impact of the first building that fell on Tuesday night, he said.

Building collapses are common in India during June-September monsoon season, when heavy rains weaken the foundations of structures that are poorly constructed.
