Microsoft will be ensuring it all goes as smoothly as possible in a bid to extend the partnership well beyond the first five years. Through the strategic partnership, the retailer will engage in a breadth of cloud innovation projects that leverage machine learning, artificial intelligence and data platform solutions across the enterprise.

Doug McMillon, Walmart CEO, expressed his company's belief in Microsoft as a "strong partner".

Microsoft and Walmart engineers are to work together, migrating large portions of and to Azure as the retail stalwart looks to strengthen its position and better compete with Amazon. Walmart is a people led, tech empowered company, and we're excited about what this technology partnership will bring for our customers and associates.

Walmart was already using Microsoft services for critical applications and workloads, it said in a statement.

Microsoft's business cloud computing platform known as Azure will help Walmart manage operations ranging from refrigeration and air conditioning to improving its supply chain and transportation. It also launched new apps for back-to-school shopping.

"Walmart is a pioneering retailer, committed to empowering its employees and delivering the best experience for its customers wherever they are". According to that story, Microsoft has had talks with Walmart about collaborating, which could create Walmart stores in the vein of Amazon Go and let the companies take on Amazon at the retail level. As part of this partnership, GE is planning to standardize its Predix solutions on Azure and will also deeply integrate the Predix portfolio with Azure's native services, including Azure IoT and Azure Data and Analytics. In 2017, AWS totaled revenue of $17.5 billion, up 43% year over year and more than double its 2015 sales.
