Newcastle boss Benitez admits he had Spain offer

Rafa Benitez must sell to buy at Newcastle United this summer - and that has thrown his long-term future into fresh doubt.

Asked if he needed to sell to buy, Benitez said: "It seems it is more or less like that". It's not ideal, but we'll try to manage the best way possible.

Fans who are never very far from open revolt over Ashley's methods are starting to fear a season of struggle - the Magpies ended the last campaign in 10th place in the Premier League after mounting a concerted fightback after the turn of the year - if the squad is not improved, and in turn that that could ultimately cost them a manager who has captured their imagination during his time to date on Tyneside.

Newcastle United and manager Rafa Benitez find themselves in transfer limbo once again under the ownership of Mike Ashley, as the controversial boss continues to restrict finances. I have been trying hard for two months to be sure we have players to bring in on loan.

Benitez, however, will wait before discussing his future.

The 59-year-old Spaniard has endured a frustrating summer to date.

Benitez, speaking at the Magpies' training camp in Ireland, said: "I don't think it's an issue with my contract".

"They know that if we do the right things then I'm keen to stay here for five years or whatever".

Newcastle have been up for sale for nearly a year, which the Chronicle confirms remains the case in May, but there is no signs of progression in negotiations and optimism that a deal would be completed before Christmas last year now feels a long, long way off.
