British Open: Man sleeps next to many beers at Carnoustie

The three-times Open champion walked off to a rousing reception from the gallery, before signing for his lowest score in 11 sorties around Carnoustie at the Open. He shot a 71, good for par for the day - and the tournament. "I've been doing this for years, braces and bandages, just that this time it's actually visible", he said.

Woods then fired a attractive second shot into the 10th hole, one of the finest shots of the tournament so far. It wasn't enough to turn the grass from brown to green, just enough to be a nuisance playing in rain gear, with towels hanging from the inside of umbrellas to stay dry and putting surfaces that were slightly slower.

Asked if there was any trepidation about taking on the shot, Woods answered: "I kept moving them back".

He got a lucky break at the last, where his pulled tee shot came within inches of landing in the Barry Burn. Woods has been one of the handful of best ball-strikers on the PGA Tour so far this season, and he hasn't had to hit many drivers (one of his weaknesses) on Carnoustie's speedways.

Rahm said there is a fine line between contending and missing the cut in most major championships, when a few stray shots can make the difference. "I mean, you can roll the ball 100 yards if you wanted to, or you can throw it straight up in the air". I know the course was not as tough as the first few days, but to play Carnoustie in any conditions with just one bogey is impressive. It grabbed the shaft and smothered it. I didn't want to be too far back if the guys got to 10 under par today.

His Open looked to be unravelling as he bogeyed the third as well, but back-to-back birdies on the fourth and fifth brought him back.

The only time he was under par for his round was after a five-iron easily cleared the Spectacle bunkers on the par-5 14th and rolled onto the green to a front pin, leaving him an 18-foot eagle putt. But he slammed the putt home and made an improbable birdie.

Two holes later, he found a pot bunker right of the par-3 16th and made bogey. A pull-hooked iron almost into the burn off the tee led to a thick wedge out before Tiger hit his approach from 100 yards to a three feet.

"I played a little bit better yesterday", Woods said of his matching scores for the opening two rounds.

He was six shots behind when he finished and figured the margin would be a little wider, which it was. Tiger Woods teed off early Friday morning after playing the afternoon on Thursday.

"I've been called Dustin many times", the joint leader Zach told reporters.
