The first season of Discovery had a lot riding on its shoulders, from bringing back the Star Trek franchise to television and winning over old fans to serving as the flagship show for the CBS All Access streaming service (disclosure: CBS is CNET's parent company). But a sizzle reel shown before the crowds at a San Diego Comic-Con panel suggested Spock wouldn't right away, and that he appears to be linked to mysterious red bursts that serve as the central mystery of the season.

"Number One" appeared in the original Star Trek pilot as the second-in-command of the Enterprise under Captain Christopher Pike. Plus, we get a glimpse of David Benjamin Tomlinson as Linus, a big-eyed alien of the Saurian species.

Whereas Season 1 of Discovery was a war season, a heavily-serialized action drama full of twists and intrigue, it looks like Season 2 is getting back to what makes Trek feel like Trek-albeit with the show's distinctive modern flair intact.

I'm sure this new Star Trek is for someone, but it's just not for me.

Rolling out on CBS All Access on a monthly basis, each of the four "Short Treks" episodes will be approximately 10-15 minutes long, and dig deeper into specific characters and themes explored on "Discovery". Rainn Wilson will return to play Harry Mudd in a short he will also direct, and Aldis Hodge will star in another as Craft, "a man who finds himself the only human on board a deserted ship". Additional episodes include a deep dive into Saru's backstory as the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, and Tilly's journey aboard the U.S.S. Discovery and her friendship with an unlikely partner.
