A number of British Airways flights were cancelled or being delayed by several hours at Heathrow's Terminal 5, according to the airport's departure board.

A British Airways spokesman said: "As a result of the temporary closure of Heathrow Airport's air traffic control tower earlier this afternoon, a small number of flights from all airlines were forced to divert to alternative airports".

British Airways passengers faced disruption at Britain's busiest airport yesterday when the airline's online check-in system crashed.

"We apologise for any inconvenience that this has caused", it added.

Passengers have also taken to social media to complain that departing flights have been stuck on the tarmac for more than an hour at Heathrow, while those due to arrive at the airport have also been diverted to Luton.

Travellers complained of cancellations and delays at Heathrow as "system issues" reportedly left BA struggling to provide boarding passes to some customers.

"Utter chaos at LHR, no communication, no emergency processes and no clue", one passenger Dominic Hill said on Twitter.

Customers have tweeted their frustration at the recent disruption.

Virgin Atlantic said it is not affected by any IT issues at Heathrow. We are doing everything we can to keep any knock-on disruption to our services to a minimum.

The failure is a blow as airlines gear up for the peak holiday period.
