A former prison beauty queen found guilty of killing her boyfriend has been sentenced to death at Milimani Law Courts.

Ruth Kamande, who won a prison beauty pageant while awaiting trial, slashed her partner Farid Mohammed, 24, to death in 2015 and was convicted in May. A Kenyan court has sentenced her to death, drawing criticism from rights groups who called the punishment "inhumane".

The judge said Kamande had displayed "manipulative" behaviour that included accessing the victim's mobile phone.

The human rights organisation's director Irungu Houghton said: "This sentence is a blow to Kenya's progressive record in commuting death sentences to terms of imprisonment".

High Court judge Jessie Lesiit on Thursday noted that Ruth Kamande deliberately stabbed her boyfriend 25 times with the intention of causing pain, leading to his death.

"I want the youth to know it is not cool to kill your boyfriends or girlfriends".

The death sentence remains on the statute books however.

In mitigation last week, Ms Kamande told the court that she has reformed since she was remanded two years and nine months ago.

She had also shown no remorse for the vicious attack which left "blood all over" the crime scene.

She stabbed her boyfriend over a love text message sent by another woman.

"The 24-year-old then, whose life was cut short is an orphan and had a task of providing for the rest of the family members, hence justice should prevail", stated the prosecution counsel.

Ms Kamande's advocate had urged the court to hand her a lenient jail sentence arguing that she had "established a close relationship with God" since being taken into custody in 2015.

When she confronted her boyfriend about it, she claimed, he threatened her saying they would both rather die than have his HIV status known to the public.
