West Nile virus found in mosquitoes trapped in Mitchell, health unit says

The Allegheny County Health Department will treat for mosquitoes in several Pittsburgh neighborhoods where they have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The person who died lived in the 75229 zip code in northwest Dallas, according to the health department. No other details about the victim were released.

West Nile Virus is communicated to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Of the 26 Dallas County residents infected previous year, two died from the mosquito-borne illness. Symptoms include: fever, headache and muscle aches.

Dusk and dawn are when mosquitoes are most active.

Since 2000, 134 cases of the virus have been diagnosed in CT residents and three people have died after being infected with the virus.

Wear clothing made of tightly woven fabric that covers the entire body.

Use effective insect repellent such as DEET or Picaridin.

Drain or treat all standing water in and around your home or workplace.

The disease can be spread to humans and animals.
