Thunderstorm warnings have been issued as the heatwave which has gripped the south east comes to an end.

Temperatures are expected to reach 25C in Sheffield today but these are set to dip towards the end of the week.

Met Éireann's forecast reads: "Tuesday will be a fresher day with some bright or sunny spells and a few showers".

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "Whilst many places will miss the heaviest rain, thunderstorms are likely to affect parts of east and southeast England during Tuesday afternoon and particularly into the evening".

"It must be noted, however, that this does not necessarily mean temperatures will be hot or that a heatwave will continue, as above average temperatures can mean one or two degrees above average".

But looking ahead to the next three months, thermometers are forecast to remain higher than average, partially because of the effects of the prolonged heatwave.

We could have warmer-than-average temperatures in the autumn, according to the Met Office.

Ms Diamond said: "This means there is an increased likelihood of warmer-than-average temperatures and below-average rainfall".

Bonnie Diamond, forecaster for the Met Office, said high pressure systems are likely to keep cool and wet weather at bay between August and October.

"Sea surface temperatures close to the United Kingdom have reached near-record levels as a result of the prolonged hot and sunny weather", said the Met Office.

Whilst the intense heat of the previous weeks does look to have passed, warm weather is expected to remain in the United Kingdom until October, because of a global heatwave that has seen record temperatures set across Europe.

However, by the start of September, the weather pattern is expected to slow, resulting in "settled" conditions.

The mercury is set to rise past 30C (85F) in parts of the United Kingdom on Monday, with 33C (91F) possible in London and to the east of the capital, the Met Office said.

Britons heading back to work after the weekend sunshine will be loosening their ties for two more sweltering days before the heatwave cools off.
