The first half of 2018 has been deadly for Palestinian children, with at least 35 children killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and besieged Gaza Strip, according to Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCIP).

The Hebrew newspaper "Haaretz" quoted an unnamed Israeli political official as saying that a comprehensive settlement in the Gaza Strip would not take place without the return of Israeli soldiers and the bodies of their soldiers detained by Hamas in Gaza.

The Palestinian news agency Wafa reported that the incident was "expected to destroy Egypt and the UN's efforts to achieve a long-term ceasefire" between Israel and Hamas. One of the grainy black and white video clips shows two men in a watchtower, one appears to open fire as puffs of smoke burst in front of him. It then cuts to footage of a shell hitting the post and an explosion.

Sources confirmed that Murjan and al-Silawi were members of the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement.

"The resistance can not allow the occupation to impose a policy of bombing sites and targeting fighters without paying the price", it said in a statement.

"The group added that "DCIP evidence has determined on multiple occasions that children killed along the Gaza Strip perimeter did not pose a direct, mortal threat at the time of their death", while noting that under worldwide law, the use lethal force is strictly reserved for instances when a" direct and mortal threat to life or of serious injury exists". Three Palestinians were reportedly killed and dozens injured, mostly by Israeli ammunition during the protests. It deemed Israel's shelling of them a "criminal act".

Since 2014, Hamas has held four Israeli soldiers, two of whose fate is unknown.
