Environment Canada issued a special air quality statement for the Town of Drayton Valley along with surrounding towns and hamlets, including Breton, Warburg, Devon, Calmar and Pigeon Lake.

Residents and visitors are advised to take precautions against possible health concerns.

Elevated levels of ozone and particulate matter may impact people with respiratory problems, cardiac disease, young children and senior citizens.

Albertans across the province noticed the taste and smell of smoke hanging in the air, with many towns and cities air qualities deteriorating throughout the day.

Some businesses are also being impacted by the combination of high temperatures and smoky conditions.

"It'd be very similar to a couple of days of snow storms, that kind of thing, which actually would be worse so at least we can still stay operating at the moment", he said.

Health officials say the air quality in the province is expected to vary over the next few days.
