Tommy Fleetwood is one of the best golfers in the world and the 27-year-old from Southport, England displayed his considerable skill during the 2018 Open Championship.

Tommy Fleetwood was paid $154,500 (£120,000) for his tied 12th-place finish at The Open - the only problem being it was sent to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

The European Tour have apologised after Tommy Fleetwood's Open winnings of nearly £120,000 were sent to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

U.S. player Tommy Fleetwood, born in 1959, discovered the unexpected windfall on Wednesday while with his friend Greg Thorner, who tweeted the bank statement showing the six-figure deposit between a $14.37 Walmart supermarket bill and a $16 wire transfer fee.

"He called it up and looked at his statement, and that's when he shouted 'Holy smoke, I've just had $154,000 paid into my account, '" Greg Thorner - the poster of the screenshot - said, per The Guardian.

The Fleetwood who did get the money is an Orlando-area golfing pro. I think what happened was that he played some Challenge Tour events on the European Tour back in the day and they must still have his details.

"It was an honest mistake", Fleetwood said, sounding dumbfounded that he had suddenly become a focus of media attention.

"It's just something I don't really look at but I'll get on top of that".

Meanwhile, there are two Zach Johnsons playing at the 100th USPGA.

The tour have apologised to both Fleetwoods, while the better known one's wife and manager Clare was off to check their bank account.

Fleetwood, who begins his PGA Championship bid at Bellerive on Thursday, said: "It looks pretty genuine". He was not positive it was the same amount that Tommy won at the Open but we checked and it was.
