"It went well and they are very grateful and appreciative of this wonderful day for their family", the Knavs' lawyer, Michael Wildes, said in a statement.

The Knavses slipped in and out of a side entrance at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Department of Homeland Security police. He wouldn't say who sponsored their green cards. "This is an example of it going right", he said.

The idea that family-based immigration could be labeled as "dirty" might have a lot to do with the Knavs' son-in-law. Wildes told the newspaper that the Knavs fulfilled the five-year requirement, but declined to give further comment.

Along with targeting illegal immigration, Donald Trump has proposed sharply curbing legal immigration.

He argues instead for a merit-based system prioritising professionals over relatives, and has drawn criticism for his vocal attacks on immigration laws and immigrants.

He said the pair had been living in the USA on green cards sponsored by Mrs Trump. Experts estimate that could cut overall immigration to the United States by 40% to 50%, if those green cards are not reallocated to another category.

The Knavses raised Melania in the rural industrial town of Sevnica while Slovenia was under Communist rule.

A former model known as Melania Knauss, she arrived in NY in 1996 and began dating Trump in 2000. They married in 2005.

She settled in NY in 1996 and met Mr Trump two years later.

Around the same time the Knavses were completing the ceremony, he was tweeting his rage about the ongoing Russian Federation probe ("an illegally brought Rigged Witch Hunt") and his excitement about plans for a sixth branch of the military ("Space Force all the way!").
