MI basketball coach John Beilein has undergone a double-bypass heart procedure and is expected to make a full recovery.

Beilein, who is expected to leave the hospital in "a few days", hopes to be fully active by the time the Wolverines begin fall practice in October. MI coach John Beilein is now recovering from heart surgery.

"The procedure is created to improve blood flow to the heart, by taking a healthy artery or vein from another part of the body and grafting it to the obstructed coronary artery", Pagani said.

"The operation went well, and we expect him to make a full recovery and be back to his usual activities within a few weeks", Dr. Pagani said in a press release.

But Beilein, 65, will miss the team's exhibition trip to Spain later this month.

The veteran coach is entering his 12th season in Ann Arbor after a brief flirtation with the Pistons this summer. He plans to be on the sideline November 6 when MI opens the 2018-19 season against Norfolk State in Ann Arbor.

"I am thrilled to ensure John's leadership of our basketball program today and into the future", said athletic director Warde Manuel. The school announced this Tuesday morning, noting that it was a scheduled procedure and that it took place at the University of Michigan's Frankel Cardiovascular Center. "(My wife), Kathleen, and our family appreciate all of the world-class care that was provided for us.

Beilein said in a statement that he's going to work very hard to be "stronger than ever" by the start of practice for the coming season.

Once Beilein returns, he will be looking to lead the Wolverines to another impressive campaign.

After he was contacted by the Detroit Pistons over the summer, Beilein signed an extension to stay at MI through the 2022-23 season.
