In an exhibition match held in San Fransisco, OpenAI Five, a group of five bots, competed against Dota 2 casters and ex-professional players and won the best of the three exhibition match easily.

It only lost a game series when it had its "heroes" selected by audience members watching the action unfold, and those selected characters severely handicapped the OpenAI Five. After completing the first draft, the OpenAI system predicted a 95%-win probability, even though the matchup seemed more or less even to the audience, suggesting that drafting is even more important to strategy than previously thought by human players. The OpenAI Five bots will take on current Dota 2 pros at the event. A bot from OpenAI was taught to play Dota 2 with the help of machine learning, and it beat the world-famous Danil "Dendi" Ishutin in a one-on-one match at The International 2017. "The typical Dota 2 game, even on the professional tier, involves quite a bit of equivocation about whether to engage in a fight, or whether to try to shift it to a more favorable battleground, or to run away from it completely". Brockman added that to overcome these challenges, the bots had to be able to develop "intuitions" about their human opponents, improvise in response to unfamiliar situations, and collaborate with one another. Next step, is The International 2018 (T18), which is Valve's own Dota 2 major and considered one of the biggest e-sports tournaments in the world. In preparation the bots played through 180 years' worth of games against each other every day.

OpenAI Five's latest win against its most formidable adversaries yet ultimately demonstrates the huge progress the bots have made over the past few months. Apparently, the five-on-five bot team has been in development all year, but this was the first true competition against real professionals. This resulted in OpenAI Five predicting a lower chance of winning of the match - just 2.9 percent, in fact.

For those who don't know, OpenAI is a non-profit organization founded by Elon Musk.
