Brady is now set to make $15 million, but will be given a variety of performance-based bonuses to bring him closer to the actual QB market.

In the last several years, quarterback Tom Brady has been willing to take a pay cut with his contract for the betterment of the team to help bring in more talent to the team.

The New England Patriots will add $5 million in performance-based incentives to Tom Brady's contract by this weekend, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday.

The adjustments are similar to what the Patriots did previous year with tight end Rob Gronkowski's deal, the source told Schefter.

Brady can earn up to $20 million this season, once the incentives are finalized. The highest-paid quarterback in the National Football League is now Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons, who signed a deal worth $30 million per season.

After skipping voluntary offseason workouts in May for personal reasons, Brady was asked if his contract status was a reason he stayed away from the team.

"I've never talked about my contract".

The deal would lift the five-time Super Bowl champion's compensation toward current market value at the quarterback position. "Those things are very personal".
