I would go further and say that it is absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letter boxes'.

The party has received complaints that the comments breach its code of conduct, and under Conservative rules they must be investigated by an independent panel.

Some things are as certain as night following day or Jeff Stelling getting over-excited about a fairly innocuous footballing incident - and sure enough, Boris Johnson sparked outrage this week.

But Mrs May, amid calls from Tory peer Lord Sheikh for Mr Johnson to be removed from the party, has insisted Mr Johnson apologise, saying his remarks "clearly caused offence".

"All jokes about religion cause offence, so it's pointless apologising for them".

Mr Johnson is facing an investigation and could be disciplined by Conservative party bosses after saying women in burkas looked like "letterboxes" and "bank robbers".

In a letter to The Times, he wrote: "You should really only apologise for a bad joke".

He wrote: 'As a lifelong beneficiary of the freedom to make jokes about religion, I do think that Boris Johnson's joke about wearers of the burka resembling letterboxes is a pretty good one'. "On that basis, no apology is required".

Meanwhile, Conor Burns, Tory MP and backer of Mr Johnson, said: "It would be perverse and freaky were the party to launch a formal investigation. I fear an eruption of anger amongst our party's core voters and grassroots activities if this obsessive political correctness doesn't stop". "Extraordinary to think he was foreign secretary only a few weeks ago".

Condemnation of the comments also came from the Chairman of the Jewish Leadership Council Jonathan Goldstein, who took to Twitter, posting: "Boris Johnson's comments totally disgraceful".

Johnson was urged to apologise by both Lewis and Prime Minister Theresa May, and after several complaints were submitted to the party, an internal investigation will now take place.
