Samsung Galaxy Note 9 review: Hands-on impressions of the new phone

There were a lot of marketing words spoken about the handset, about how it was "inspiring", "removed borders and interruptions" and basically worked with you... a lot of words that don't really tell us much, meaning that most of us were left wondering 'what's actually new here?'.

The Note 9 is "designed for a level of performance, power and intelligence that today's power users want and need", added DJ Koh, the head of Samsung's mobile division.

The new Samsung Galaxy Note9 shares a lot of qualities with the new Galaxy Tab 4.

It makes one wonder why Samsung bothered putting on a large event for such a thing, at enormous cost, just to announce some small changes to the phone.

"We're three generations removed now", Samsung's director of USA product marketing, Suzanne De Silva, said of the company's renewed confidence in the battery. You won't hear me complaining, though: the things Samsung has been able to pull off, like its still-fantastic rotating bezel interface, just don't seem possible to build atop another company's software.

And then there's the Galaxy Watch, which is a Tizen-based smartwatch.

Other options are available - Samsung is spoiling us for choice!

Bixby, Samsung's misunderstood smart assistant, is also present on the wearable, ready to serve you on demand. Tizen works on both Android and iOS, so users will not be limited by the operating system of their smartphone.

This should mean users are far less likely to touch the lens when trying to unlock this new phablet. The one you see in the image above is the 42mm one, as it also comes in a black 46mm variant for those that have massive wrists.

The South Korean giant announced that the smartphone will be available globally from August 24 and for the India market, it will be manufactured at the company's largest mobile manufacturing plant in Noida.

And the Note9 itself, it's on Samsung's official online shop and you can pre-order the from now until August 21. Samsung says anyone who orders the watch before September 8 will get a free watch band.

The Galaxy Watch works on its own, with LTE connectivity that works in 15-plus countries across 30-plus carriers' networks.

More than half of those sales were claimed by Apple, however, which launched a cellular version of its Watch in September previous year. Of course, there's always the chance that the pricing will remain similar to the Apple Watch Series 3's one, but we wouldn't, err, put our money on that.

The 960fps Super Slow Mo feature has been improved.
