Mr McGregor said the Galaxy Watch would also be the first cellular smartwatch to work with payment technology from all of Australia's "Big Four" banks, allowing users to pay for goods by tapping the wristwatch on contactless payment terminals at the counter.

"We expect the Note 9 to sell more than its previous model and we will mobilise all our sales and marketing resources to ensure the successful launch", KyeongTae Lee, Samsung's vice-president of mobile communication, told investors on the company's earnings conference call last week. The watch will last "several days" on a single charge thanks to its new optimized processor and low-power technology built into the device.

The Galaxy Watch comes in a silver 46mm version and 42mm option in black or rose gold.

Samsung revealed the Galaxy Note 9, its latest answer to Apple's iPhone X, at a special event in NY last night.

But now we have proper confirmation from Unpacked that the Samsung Galaxy Watch is absolutely happening.

In the U.S., the Galaxy Watch price starts at $329 for the 42mm version and is back to $349.99 for the 46mm version.

The "phablet" - combining features of a phone with a tablet - comes with Samsung's largest battery in a flagship phone - and the company seems to be confident in having left the explosive failure of the Galaxy Note 7 batteries behind it. It has wireless charging, IP68 water and dust resistance, a headphone jack.no notch, a great stylus, and so much more. There's also a stress management tracker, breathing exercises for wellness, an well as a "new advanced" sleep tracker. That's going to be our new go-to watch face when wearing this. The Note 9 is also a big phone - so if you're a fan of smaller screens then you'll probably want to stick with the iPhone. In the USA, the Galaxy Watch LTE version will be available through AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon as well as at Samsung.

Pre-orders for the smartphone will kick off tomorrow on 10 August, with the 6GB/128GB model costing £899, and the 8GB /512GB storage model priced at £1,099. Samsung has put Bluetooth into it so you can click the bottom like a standard pen and execute actions like taking a selfie, play or pause video or progress through a slideshow.

Samsung is eschewing Wear OS (formerly Android Wear) with its latest smartwatch, and that may be the reason behind its longer battery life. There's some neat workout software additions here, too.
