Baker Mayfield did a lot of things well in his National Football League preseason debut Thursday night against the Giants, including prove to his many lazy Johnny Manziel-comparing doubters that he's a lot more pro-ready than they think.

After an opening three-and-out, Mayfield returned to guide Cleveland on a 14-play, 72-yard scoring march highlighted by a 21-yard strike to C.J.

He completed four of 11 passes for 70 yards in the first half.

"They came out with some fire", head coach Hue Jackson said during a halftime broadcast.

The second of those scampers - a 5-yard, red-zone dash on fourth-and-2 - set up Mayfield's 10-yard touchdown toss to David Njoku.

It's only the first preseason game, but the Baker Mayfield hype train is running like a well-oiled machine.

Mayfield was up next and, following a three-and-out, settled in on his second series, finding Rashard Higgins with a pretty back-shoulder throw on the sideline for a 26-yard gain.

But Cleveland couldn't have been more pleased with Mayfield, who intermixed his big-play penchant with mostly sound decision making, all while bringing the energy and leadership skills that have defined his rise from former walk-on to Heisman to the man who's tasked with restoring the NFL's most hopeless franchise. Taylor will start under center, though not expected to stay in the game long.

Mostly notably, the additions of veterans Tyrod Taylor and Jarvis Landry.

With one-year left on his contract, Taylor can prove that he deserves that recognition moving beyond the 2018 season, whether it be in Cleveland or else where.

Top overall draft pick Mayfield will see some action against the Giants, who have their own prized rookie in second overall selection Saquon Barkley.

The Browns host the Bills next Friday.
