The worst fear proved true for Vikings fans regarding guard Nick Easton.

With the Vikings handing out several massive contract extensions with big signing bonuses to players at other positions this year, the possibility of landing a starting-caliber offensive lineman in free agency is also a massive challenge, making an internal candidate the most logical solution.

NBC's Pro Football Talk says Minnesota's patchwork line for Saturday's opening preseason game against Denver will consist of backups Tom Compton at left guard, Cornelius Edison at center and Danny Isidora at right guard, with projected starters Riley Reiff at left tackle and right tackle Rashod Hill. It wasn't the news they wanted to hear.

Vikings starting left guard Nick Easton (neck) is out for the year, per ESPN. Vikings coach Mike Zimmer confirmed Thursday afternoon that Easton is headed to injured reserve.
