Playing in the afternoon wave, Scott's fellow Queenslander Day was only beginning to make his move before the weather suspension.

Fox had fired a two under 68 in his first round but couldn't keep pace with Woodland, who followed his opening round 64 with a 66.

Woodland is one shot ahead of fellow American Kevin Kisner (64). His stroke on the green was pure, and Woods walked in his first birdie of the day at No. 2.

While officials sounded the horn just after 3.30pm local time on Friday (Saturday, NZ time), Fox was - 1 under after 12 holes for a tournament score of three under, seven shots behind leader Gary Woodland.

It's hard to stop Dustin Johnson these days - even when it seems he's hitting two balls at once.

The Woods putter was on target again on the fifth, but he faces a long day on Saturday as he has 11 holes of his second round to complete with Rory McIlroy and defending champion Justin Thomas. They have also finished their first two rounds.

The halfway cut is projected to be at level par, which means Sergio Garcia is likely to miss the weekend for the fifth major in a row after the Spaniard struggled to a 71 that included a trip to the water at the sixth which led to a double-bogey five.
