Brazilian Ronaldo in intensive care with pneumonia

Former Brazil and Real Madrid great Ronaldo Nazario is now in hospital in Ibiza recovering from pneumonia, local media said on Sunday.

The 41-year-old, who retired in 2011, was taken to the island's Can Misses hospital on Friday evening and diagnosed with pneumonia, according to newspaper Diario De Ibiza.

The two-time World Cup champion reportedly asked for a transfer to a private health facility identified as Clinica Nuestra Señora del Rosario later that night before being taken to intensive care.

Contacted by AFP, a hospital spokeswoman said she was unable to give any information for privacy reasons.

Sources told Diario de Ibiza that Ronaldo was recovering well.

No-one at the private hospital Ronaldo is now said to be a patient at could be contacted early on Sunday for comment.

At club level, he spent time with Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Inter Milan. He is thought to have arrived on the island a few days ago before his illness started.

Ronaldo finished his career with an impressive 414 goals, 62 of which came in just 98 appearances for the Brazilian national side.

He represented his country in three World Cups, including the 2002 edition, when Brazil won its fifth tournament title. He has suffered since the end of his career with a thyroid problem that has caused him to gain a lot of weight, and back in 2012 he contracted Dengue fever and was admitted to hospital.
