Michigan Athletics Looking Into Potential Shoe Sales Violation

North Carolina, which self-reported that 13 football players committed secondary NCAA violations by reselling shoes given to them as part of the school's apparel deal, has contacted at least three other schools which it learned might have had players sell shoes to the same retailer.

An ESPN report indicated that 23 pairs of team-issued MI shoes were found on the shoe marketplace website StockX.

ESPN had the shoe-marketplace site "StockX" take a look back at its approximately 17,000 shoes sold to figure out the number of player exclusives, along with the average price of each.

Prior to being granted the shoes, Ablauf said MI football players sign a form that acknowledges selling the shoes would jeopardize their eligibility. "Our compliance office is looking into this matter and will determine if anything needs to be reported to the NCAA".

The ESPN report notes that officials at Marquette and Cal are also investigating potential violations related to the sale of team-issued gear.

A MI spokesman also says that while MI shoes might be in the marketplace, it doesn't necessarily mean they were sold by student-athletes.

"Oregon obviously has a long and storied history with Nike, but MI is the cool new kid on the block due to the continuing hype surrounding its landmark [Jordan] deal (which began in August 2016)", StockX CEO Josh Luber said. The school itself also might have donated, at times, some pairs to charity.

Jordan Brand outfits Michigan's football and basketball teams, while the rest of the programs are outfitted by Nike. The shoes are also marked by the equipment staff with the player's name or uniform number, making it more hard to sell them anonymously.

OR now takes the most drastic measures to avoid having athletes sell the exclusive shoes.

StockX's data shows that the most valuable player exclusive shoe sold was the Air Jordan V Retro Fab Five PE, for $11,500.
