"This course would be phenomenal - and probably is phenomenal - if it's not playing soft". What you see is what he does on the golf course.

Brooks Koepka and Charl Schwartzel had the best rounds of the field, firing 7-under-par 63s to tie the tournament record for the lowest score in a round.

"Another low round", Woods said. "On the second hole, when I hit it in the water, that was a big boost to knock it in there tight and only make bogey".

Woodland, tied for third with Jon Rahm and Rickie Fowler at 9 under, three strokes behind leader Brooks Koepka, is paired with Tiger Woods today at 1:35 p.m. and that' just fine with him.

"There's a lot of star power, and there should be, it's a major championship", Koepka added.

The best possible fix in the short-term: show more live golf from more players.

Koepka is trying to become the first player since Woods to capture the U.S. Open and PGA in the same year.

Golfers aren't really swayed much anyway by what happens outside the ropes. Koepka just may be that kind of complete, too. He missed a short putt at his final hole Saturday to keep from playing the weekend.

Tiger fans and Tiger fans, of the Missouri and Woods variety, will be rooting against Woodland, but Kansas fans have grown by the day and have made their presence felt. "You can really control the spin, the flight".

His putting let him down on the par-four 15th as he three-putted from 12 metres.

The 2-8 PM Eastern window is a limited one, more in line with what the Masters offers on Thursday and Friday, and the PGA doesn't have the Masters' ability to artificially suppress supply in hopes of increasing demand.

Scott had a 65, despite missing three putts from 6 feet, two of them for birdie.

Defending champion Justin Thomas was at 2 under through seven holes, while Rory McIlroy was frustrated with all pars in his seven holes.

To top things off, weather blew in early in the afternoon (thunderstorms are always possible when you have your tournament in St. Louis late in the summer) and canceled play for the day at 4:35 PM Eastern, meaning after a full morning without golf, anyone who had planned on spending the day with the broadcast was out of luck. To be able to come back out this morning and play nicely was good.

"If you're hitting it down in the fairway with the way the greens are designed, you can get the ball to about 15 feet on nearly every hole".

Koepka was waltzing along with a five-shot lead until his flawless 43-hole stretch ended with a bogey at the par-four 14th. "I enjoyed every minute", he said.

On the prospect of a 62 he said: "I didn't know there was that". I got to give it a rap up the hill, it's steep, I know that -- there wasn't a whole lot of grass over there on the right side of the green and I thought that I should have played it faster than what I was thinking.

Woodland's 36-hole score broke the PGA record by one shot, most recently set by Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb at Baltusrol.

"He's got a great head on his shoulders", Furyk said.

His third attempt was hardly text-book but the ball did manage to hang onto the greenside fringe, allowing Woodland to finally card a seven and slump to three-over for the round. He barely managed to scrape that one out - but it stayed in the rough of the upslope. He got up-and-down to escape with bogey.
