Shanahan said Monday that Alfred Morris, who spent two prolific seasons in Shanahan's system in Washington, would meet the team in Houston this week.

In 2017, the Cowboys turned to Morris when the court system finally cleared the way for the National Football League to enforce its six-game suspension of starting running back Ezekiel Elliott during the second half of the season.

Morris and Shanahan overlapped during the 2012 and 2013 seasons in Washington, where Shanahan served as the offensive coordinator.

Morris' addition comes in the wake of Jerick McKinnon undergoing an MRI, but the injury isn't considered serious. Morris enjoyed a productive two-year run with Shanahan, producing 1,613 yards rushing and 13 touchdowns during his rookie season in 2012, and then followed up with 1,275 yards rushing and seven touchdowns in 2013. McKinnon suffered a calf strain in Sunday's practice and will sit out this week before being re-evaluated next week.

Morris, 29, has spent the past two seasons with the Dallas Cowboys working behind Ezekiel Elliott. "And I do believe he has a chance to make the team here". "I think with some of the injuries that we've had, he does have a chance to compete", Shanahan said. Raheem Mostert, Jeremy McNichols and undrafted rookie Jeff Wilson Jr. round out the position. "He's getting in late, but we'll see how he does over these next few weeks, and if he's running the same way he always has, he'll have a chance".
