Auto crashes into security barriers outside Houses of Parliament in London

Streets in the area surrounding the British legislature were cordoned off and closed to traffic during peak morning rush hour and there was a heavy police presence.

A Scotland Yard statement reads: "At 0737 hours today, a vehicle was in collision with barriers outside the Houses of Parliament".

A number of people were injured when a auto collided with security barriers outside London's parliament building on Tuesday and the driver was arrested, police said. Tuesday August 14, 2018. A series of ambulances arrived at the scene.

At least five police patrol cars attended the scene within minutes while armed officers were seen dragging the driver from the vehicle.

Images posted to social media showed a man in handcuffs being led away from the vehicle by officers.

Officers remain on the scene.

She said: "I was walking on the other side [of the road]. We will issue further info when we have it", London's police force said in a statement on Twitter.

Police said they could not immediately determine whether the incident was terrorism-related. The station, the closes to the Houses of Parliament, was only operating for internal transfers.

The BBC's Callum May, at the scene, said: "Parliament Square is now ringed by blue police tape".
