That same year is when officials believe the Golden State Killer began his crime spree, committing dozens of rapes, murders and burglaries over the next decade.

The man authorities believe is the Golden State Killer faces yet another murder charge, authorities said Monday.

"Today I have instructed my staff to file first degree murder charges against Joseph DeAngelo for the 1975 murder of Mr. Clyde Snelling". Snelling was shot and killed while trying to save his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth Hupp, from a man attempting to abduct her, KFSN reported.

"Based on the information detectives have uncovered, we have identified Joseph James DeAngelo as the sole suspect" in Snelling's murder, Salazar said. In September 1975, she said a masked gunman broke into her bedroom in the middle of the night, threatened her, and then dragged her out to their carport.

"He couldn't believe what he was seeing and he just charged out the back door and the man pushed me down", Ms Hupp said.

DeAngelo is suspected in dozens of burglaries and multiple attempted rapes in Visalia - but Snelling's slaying was the only crime authorities could attribute to him that had not passed the statute of limitations, said Tulare County district attorney Tim Ward.

There is no DNA evidence in the killing of Snelling.

With Monday's filing, Ward said, investigators have "officially linked" DeAngelo with both cases.

While DeAngelo is not directly linked to Snelling's murder by DNA, police chief Jason Salazar said he can prove DeAngelo is also the Visalia Ransacker. Among the nicknames, the serial killer was also dubbed the East Area Rapist.

DeAngelo worked as a police officer in the nearby town of Exeter from 1973 to 1976. He was arrested in April at his Citrus Heights home by Sacramento sheriff's officials after investigators linked his DNA to murder scenes in Southern California. By the following year, he had moved and was working with the Auburn Police Department some 35 miles outside of Sacramento.

Authorities said the Maggiores were killed after possibly spotting the Golden State Killer as they walked their dog near a home in Rancho Cordova, outside Sacramento.

DeAngelo is now being held in Sacramento County Main Jail and faces 12 counts of murder in Sacramento, Orange, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
