What is a subtropical storm vs. a tropical storm?

Hurricane experts with the federal government downgraded their predictions on Thursday for the rest of hurricane season, saying theres a 60 percent chance the final months will bring below-average storm activity.Thats a significant shift from origi. Continuity prevents a higher forecast, but Lane seems destined to eventually become a category-4 hurricane like Hector.

Subtropical Storm Ernesto is continuing to churn northward Wednesday night, beginning a slow turn that will take it away from the USA and Canada. Tropical storm-force winds of 39 mph or more extend up to 35 miles from Lane's center, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, which monitors East Pacific storms.

Hurricane season peaks in September and does not end until November 30th. Some additional strengthening is possible during the next 24 hours. The system has about two days to develop into a pure tropical storm before the environment becomes hostile for development.

"It's always great when we can take another name off that list without having to worry about any threats to home", said WLOX First Alert Meteorologist Wesley Williams.
