President Trump, revoke my security clearance, too

Brennan, whose criticisms of Trump have escalated in recent months, wrote that the president was "desperate" to end the Russian Federation investigation.

The public spat highlights the increasingly partisan shadow that's been cast over national security and intelligence in the Trump era.

"There needs to be an official determination made about this, and that, I think, can only be done by the Mueller investigation", Clapper told CNN on Thursday.

The White House announced Wednesday it will be cutting off Brennan's access to classified information.

Sanders says the security clearances of other current and formers officials are also "under review".

He had high hopes for Trump as president, he writes, but he has been let down.

"If, however, Director Brennan's statement is purely political and based on conjecture, the president has full authority to revoke his security clearance as head of the Executive Branch", Burr added.

"Mr Trump clearly has become more desperate to protect himself and those close to him", said Brennan, seeing "an attempt to scare into silence others who might dare to challenge him".

Former FBI Director James Comey and former National Security Agency director Michael Hayden, among others, could also see their clearances revoked.

Trump appeared to make a direct link in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday. "And that is a disgusting message to be sending to folks who are there to tell you objective truth".

Brennan has been deeply critical of Trump's conduct, calling his performance at a press conference last month with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Finland "nothing short of treasonous".

The decision to revoke Brennan's security clearance has evidently been in the works for weeks.

President Donald Trump confers with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, left, during a cabinet meeting on Thursday in the White House. The original statement released by the White House on Wednesday included a date of July 26, although aides said that was an error.
