Weather meteorologist Simon King said: "Into the weekend, we have got this area of low pressure, a tropical storm is actually going to move its way in across the United Kingdom, particularly through Saturday night into Sunday".

Although Lane is expected to continue moving west "for the next day or so", it's still forecast to subsequently turn toward the west-northwest and become a hurricane by Friday and possibly a major hurricane over the weekend, according to weather officials.

By the time it reaches the United Kingdom it will be a post-tropical cyclone with more warm and humid conditions accompanying any rainfall - especially in the south east of England which is expected to stay mainly dry.

"It's coming from the Atlantic and the main band of rain does not come until the early hours on Sunday morning - most of us will be asleep".

Britain has been subjected to "changeable weather" this week with heavy downpours, thunderstorms, strong winds and cooler temperatures dashing hopes of more warmth and sunshine.

Though there's to be sunshine over parts of Munster and Leinster during Saturday day time, Met Éireann has said that heavy rain "will develop later in the day along the Atlantic Seaboard and will become widespread early Saturday night". The system should merge with a frontal zone this weekend and bring some wind and rain to the UK.

Rain looks set to spread southwards across England overnight on Wednesday and into the early hours on Thursday morning, with showers in London and Kent by the afternoon. This will then bring heavy rain and strong winds to the north-east this weekend'.

'It is expected to track north eastward towards the UK.

Friday in the south is set to be generally dry, although warm, humid and often rather cloudy.
