Fans of the superstar also gathered outside her childhood church in Detroit, Michigan to honour her passing.

On Thursday Patti paid her own moving tribute to the I Say a Little Prayer singer.

The singer, whose hit songs include "Chain of Fools" and 'Think, ' had a long-standing professional relationship with Wonder, with whom she performed 13 years ago at the Annual Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in Pasadena, California.

In a heartfelt tribute from the Obamas, the former president and his wife Michelle praised Franklin's "unmatched musicianship", which they said "helped define the American experience".

- Franklin has performed at the inaugurations of Presidents Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and Barack Obama.

Ariana Grande appeared on The Tonight Show Thursday night to celebrate the release of her new album Sweetener - but she kicked things off by celebrating the life of Aretha Franklin. "She was probably only about five years old, but that's how I first met her". "All of our other friends that we grew up with were gone".

From the Obamas to Ariana Grande, almost everyone's tributes to the queen of soul have been lovely.

She did just about everything she every wanted on the stage and in the studio. "Her voice was unique, her piano playing underrated - she was one of my favourite pianists", John said, in part. She could make many a meal.

Singers and musicians quickly flooded social media in mourning her passing, which came on the same day that fellow United States music giant Elvis Presley died at his home in Memphis, the city where Franklin was born, 41 years ago.

Ms Franklin was surrounded by her friends and family at her home when she passed.

It was revealed this week that the Respect chart-topper was "gravely ill" in Detroit.

"I knew "Respect" from Otis Redding, [but] when I heard her sing it, it was nearly like hearing a whole new song".

And she put Detroit on the map.
