In the wake of those and some other recent high-profile gaffes he's made in recent weeks, the Tesla chairman and CEO chose to sit for an hour-long interview with The New York Times. Members of the Tesla Board of Directors have anxious Elon doesn't sleep after taking Ambien. he tweets, and it has caused the company problems. most recently when he tweeted he wanted to take the company private.

Members of Tesla's board of directors are reportedly concerned about his use of drugs like the sleep aid Ambien.

While he acknowledged that no one read the post before he sent it, Musk said he did not regret it - "Why would I?" - and that he would not stop using Twitter.

The drug can cause a series of side effects including a unusual combination of sleep walking and amnesia and some board members believe this could contribute to Mr Musk's late-night Twitter seasons, according to The Times. The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating the company on multiple fronts, including issues related to disclosure about production of the Model 3 sedan.

On the physical toll his job is taking, Mr Musk said: "It's not been great, actually". Elon says that, for time being, he's not going anywhere or leaving his roles as Tesla's chairman and its top executive.

Several Tesla Inc shareholders have told Reuters they are concerned that the electric vehicle maker will have to pay more to fund its growth if it becomes a private company and loses the ability to sell new shares to stock market investors.

Musk is known for odd behavior and controversial statements, but investors have stuck with him and driven Tesla to a higher market value than General Motors. They can have the job.

Meanwhile, Tesla fell 1.1pc to $332.72 at 10:49am on Frankfurt's Tradegate.

The money-losing company has been burning through cash as it aggressively ramps up Model 3 production and come out of what Musk has called a "production hell".

Output is well on track for weekly production goals, and set for a significant boost, according to Evercore ISI analysts who toured the plant.

Musk repeatedly teared up during the Times interview, telling the newspaper that he nearly missed his brother's wedding as he worked 120-hour weeks and referring to an "excruciating" period of trying to meet the company's vehicle production goals.

"All night - no friends, nothing", he said. A couple of years ago, Tesla approached Facebook executive Sheryl Sandberg about the job, Mr Musk told the newspaper, but added that no active search is taking place now "to the best of my knowledge".

Tesla's board earlier this week formed a special committee to evaluate proposals to take the company private.

Musk says he left a meeting with wealth fund officials July 31 with no question that the deal could be closed.

Tesla Inc.'s board of directors is on the lookout for senior talent - though it's not actively searching for a chief operating officer, a person familiar with the board's thinking said late Friday. Tesla could be on the hook for any of those losses as a result of trading on information in Musk's tweet. But there are doubts about whether he will be able to pull the deal off.

Aug 10: Shareholder complaint is filed in San Francisco.
