There are reports a massive quake of magnitude eight has struck in the Pacific islands near Tonga.

The quake hit at 9:02 a.m. about 2 miles north of Fawnskin, nearly 6 miles west-northwest of Big Bear City and almost 15 miles east-northeast of Lake Arrowhead.

So far, there is no information on damages, or injuries.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was "no tsunami threat because the natural disaster is located too deep inside the Earth".

The area is located on the earthquake-prone Ring of Fire.

Its power approaches the strongest deep-focus (over 300km deep) quake on record, the magnitude 8.3 Okhotsk Sea quake of 2013.

The quake struck at 0020 GMT (10:20 AEST) on Sunday and was 560km below the Earth which would have dampened the shaking at the surface. "People will feel it but it's so deep that I would not expect any damage".
