The 26-year-old world number 17 came from behind to defeat Halep 2-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 in two hours and five minutes.

Halep was playing close to her best in a one-sided opening set that she claimed 6-2, her clinical tennis overwhelming the underdog.

A handful of errors by Sabalenka gave Halep her first match point but Sabalenka fought back with an ace into the corner.

Bertens was then rewarded by her persistent aggression, as she reached set point in that game when her strong backhand rolled over the net after clipping the tape, but Halep persevered and held on for 5-5, as the players inexorably moved towards the tiebreak.

It was also her second victory over Kvitova in nine days after beating the Czech in the third round of the Rogers Cup. "I was a little bit exhausted this week but it was a pleasure to come here and play".

"We've put a lot of work in to get more fit, and play more aggressive on the hard courts, and it's working out".

The set went to a tie-break and, after scoring four points in a row, Bertens later saved championship point before taking the set. "I have lost three finals here but maybe I'll be able to win one in the future".
