In a crushing blow to those are hoping to complete their collection of plastic Little Shop toys - and those who want to buy groceries, I guess - a number of Coles supermarkets are closed this morning, thanks to what has been described as a nation-wide register outage.

"This store is now closed due to circumstances beyond our control".

Shoppers posted images on social media of long queues at Coles stores in the ACT and Victoria.

Coles confirmed to SBS News that some "minor IT problems" had affected some supermarkets, "which were out of our team members' control", but all were now open and trading.

This morning Coles supermarket stores were closed amid a nationwide computer outage, and shoppers reacted to the debacle using the company's marketing line.

They were greeted by a note on the door, explaining the supermarket giant was experiencing technical issues.

Coles stores across the country are closed owing to an IT issue affecting cash registers. "We apologise for any inconvenience caused".
