Arianna Huffington is calling on Elon Musk to adopt a healthier work-life balance, but the Tesla CEO says that's not an option. I just got home from the factory.

Still, the Tesla CEO responded to the letter with a tweet in which he said that Ford Motor Co. and Tesla are the only two American vehicle companies to avoid bankruptcy.

He added, "You think this is an option. It is not." Musk tweeted at 2:32 a.m. on Sunday.

Tesla shares plunged 8.9 percent on Friday after the interview with the New York Times in which he described the past 12 months as "the most hard and painful year of my career".

The volatile exec stunned Wall Street on August 7 when in a tweet not reviewed or expected by the Tesla board announced plans to take the company private at $420 a share and that he'd secured funding for the initiative as well. He later said that meeting with Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund had given him confidence to announce the news.

Huffington's intervention comes at a time when she has been campaigning in support of the benefits of sleep.

The company is now under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, which had already been probing Tesla's order volume and revenue figures.
