Arsenal coach Unai Emery, who also moved to London this summer to replace Arsene Wenger, said he took positives from the defeat.

Not the most convincing of quotes from Chelsea's talisman.

'Last season it was direct balls and for me to protect the ball in the air and it's not my best quality.

Dixon said the Chelsea boss "might need a fag" after they surrendered a 2-0 lead to go in at half-time level. "It's better for me".

"It would be a bit odd for [Chelsea] to let me go and not recruit another player". "He [Sarri] works with the ball always and when you always have the ball the strikers have more chances", Morata said.

Kovacic will be hoping that he has done enough to convince Sarri that he should start in Chelsea's third outing of the new season against Newcastle United next weekend. They will nearly certainly achieve that should they perform with the cleverness and skill in attack that did for Arsenal but, equally, they could come unstuck should they display the naivety in defence that allowed Unai Emery's side to get back into the contest before half-time. "We lost distances, we were not able to press or defend, we were really in trouble".

"We did very well for 75 minutes of the 90". So we were in trouble.

Dixon then issued an apology himself and said: "No, if my choice of word offended anybody I'd like to apologise".

"We need to continue working for what we want, our process, today we had two midfielders one 19 and one 21 years old, we need to give them the confidence to play, but our way, our process, is to improve and give these chances to to the young players".

Italy midfielder Jorginho, who Sarri brought with him from Napoli, was commanding in the heart of midfield and Ross Barkley, who barely featured under previous Chelsea coach Antonio Conte, looked strong and confident.
