Both signed by Mourinho for a combined fee of £60 million, they have started the season as first choice but it would be no surprise if they were both sat in the stands when Tottenham turn up at Old Trafford on August 27.

"Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof may have played like youth team players but they are defenders Mourinho spent £60million to bring in".

Paul Pogba believes Manchester United deserved their 3-2 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday and warns they must learn a "big lesson" from their performance.

Romelu Lukaku briefly brought United back into the game at 2-1.

Bailly and Lindelof both struggled as United looked all at sea on the south coast, with Paul Pogba's injury time penalty putting a brighter look on proceedings.

United conceded three goals in the first half at the Amex Stadium as crucial ground was already lost in the Premier League title race and several players have come in for criticism.

"To mistakes (putting Manchester United's defeat down to), we made mistakes and we were punished by our mistakes". For me that's the story of the game. "We made incredible mistakes in some crucial moments, mistakes that killed us".

"Mourinho is right. Class is something which can not be bought", said Guardiola when asked about the Portuguese tactician's comments.

Burnley, who have now gone seven league games without a win, were swept aside by two goals in the opening six minutes of the second half.

After relentless City pressure, which featured Guardiola's team having 80% possession, the champions finally took the lead on 25 minutes, the start of a three-goal blitz inside 10 minutes. "There are basic mistakes that makes it nearly an impossible mission to win the match".

United were desperate for a leader to help inspire a second-half response but Pogba seemed more intent on bemoaning the situation before converting an inconsequential spot-kick deep into stoppage time.

"I have to learn from my reality", Mourinho said. "If they send me one of these shirts, I will give up about the royalties". United's manager refused to share any thoughts about his players, claiming he has been criticised by the media for speaking too openly in the past about individuals who have displeased him.

France midfielder Pogba took blame for his lethargic display, admitting he had been well below his best.

"I think, within the group, they were that disappointed with the overall performance [at Watford]", he said.

"He is in his third season and I think he will feel extremely disappointed that he wasn't supported in the transfer market", Neville said on Sky Sports.
