Hawaiian Islands on alert for possible Hurricane Lane impacts

A hurricane watch has been issued for Hawaii and Maui counties.

"Slight weakening is expected during the next couple of days, but Lane is forecast to remain a unsafe hurricane as it draws closer to the Hawaiian Islands", forecasters said.

On Tuesday morning, Lane was positioned 450 miles south-southeast of Kona, tracking west at 12 mph.

Hurricane Lane is now about 450 miles south-southeast of Kaliua Kona, which is on the west side of the Big Island, or about 620 miles southeast of Honolulu, according to Leigh Anne Eaton, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Honolulu Forecast Office.

While the storm has gained strength over the past day and is only 7 mph shy of Category 5 strength, the Hurricane Center predicts it to begin slowly weakening over the next 24 hours due to increasing wind shear, which would disrupt thunderstorm development.

In other words, Lane is likely to maintain hurricane strength when it makes a close approach or direct strike on the Big Island on Thursday. Honolulu, the state's largest city and capital, is on the island of O'ahu.

While there is still considerable uncertainty in the forecast for Lane, it appears the storm will be passing close enough to the islands on Thursday and Friday to bring significant impacts to the southern portions of the islands, especially along the coastline.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration has been sending multiple aircraft into and around the storm in order to help observe the hurricane and improve the forecast, providing a better idea of the threat Lane presents to Hawaii.

Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 40 miles from the center of Lane and tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 140 miles.

Isn't there a volcano erupting there?

"Hurricanes are rare for this region", Dean said Tuesday.

NASA satellite imagery shows the hurricane is now in the Central Pacific Ocean southeast of the islands.

Only four named storms have made landfall in Hawaii since 1959 (two hurricanes and two tropical storms). This media house does not correct any spelling or grammatical error within press releases and commentaries.
