Red Bull confirms Gasly will replace Ricciardo

The French Formula One driver Pierre Gasly will graduate from Toro Rosso to Red Bull Racing as replacement for departing Australian Daniel Ricciardo next year.

Ricciardo shocked Red Bull by choosing to leave the team despite having agreed a new contract in principle, instead opting to join Renault from 2019 onward.

While Sainz, another Red Bull junior, was also in the frame to replace Ricciardo, his hard relationship with Verstappen when the pair were team-mates together at Toro Rosso made Gasly the favourite to take the seat.

Gasly's appointment at Red Bull means three of the 10 teams have now confirmed their driver line-ups for 2019 - the others being Mercedes and Renault.

Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner commended the Frenchman for his showing thus far, proving his worth to step up next season.

"His stellar performances this year at the Honda-powered team, in only his first full season in Formula One, have only enhanced his reputation as one of the most exciting young drivers in motorsport".

By signing Gasly, Red Bull Racing will likely have the youngest lineup on the Formula 1 grid next season.

"Red Bull has always looked to fight for championships or victories and that's what I want".

"I'm so excited to be joining this top team", he added.

"As hugely exciting a moment as this is, I am fully aware of the challenge this special opportunity offers me and the expectations that faces any driver at Aston Martin Red Bull Racing".

Racing in the midfield as has been the case for Gasly with Toro Rosso can mask any potentially less than ideal performances and the Frenchman is aware that the spotlight will shine brighter and critics will be harsher with podiums, wins and ultimately world titles expected by the Red Bull hierarchy if the auto is capable of doing so.

"While our immediate focus remains fully on achieving our best result in the 2018 World Championship, we look forward to competing in 2019 with Max and Pierre at the wheel of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing". I'm looking forward to rewarding the faith that Dietrich Mateschitz, Christian Horner and Dr Helmut Marko have placed in me. I wish to thank Franz Tost and everyone at Toro Rosso and the factory in Faenza for giving me the golden opportunity of a drive in Formula 1 and their incredible commitment and support, which I know will continue for the rest of this season.

Gasly's promotion to the senior team opens a vacancy at Toro Rosso, with the junior outfit yet to confirm either of its 2019 drivers.
