Additionally, 422 dead birds from 18 counties have tested positive for WNV in 2018, and 1,606 mosquito samples from 28 counties have also tested positive for West Nile virus this year.

The state of MI has now documented 21 residents officially diagnose with West Nile virus as of Friday.

The risk of serious illness or death from West Nile Virus is low.

So far this year human cases have been reported in Adams (2), Attala, Calhoun (2), Copiah, Forrest (2), Harrison (2), Hinds (11), Itawamba, Jones, Lauderdale, Madison, Marion, Oktibbeha, Pearl River, Rankin, Walthall and Washington counties.

"Controlling an epidemic of WNV infection is a community effort that calls upon residents to take preventative measures to reduce exposure", said Ganesh Shivaramaiyer, DCHHS interim director.

To avoid mosquito bites, people should use insect repellent while outside.

The patient began to show symptoms in July and subsequent lab testing confirmed the West Nile diagnosis and "is now under medical care", the agency said in an August 1 news release.

Wearing long sleeves, long trousers, and socks when outdoors to help keep mosquitos away from your skin can help, according to a statement from the department.

Make sure your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes.

California's West Nile virus website includes the latest information on WNV activity in the state. Some of the most common places that water collects are gutters, jar lids, tires and flower pot trays.
